The master’s degree specialty and graduate certificate in Emergency Planning and Response can be earned entirely online or evenings on campus.
The potential for disruption to everyday life is a real possibility at any time. These events can be natural, such as an earthquake, fire, or hurricane, or they can be man-made such as an accident, hazardous material exposure, or act of terrorism. Emergency plans and responses must be developed beforehand to help ensure the least possible impact on the welfare of those affected. Viewing all phases of response as an integrated system is a major theme that is examined throughout this specialty. The roles of emergency response teams, government agencies, businesses, private citizens, and citizen groups are addressed. A variety of strategies for mitigation and plans for recovery are evaluated and analyzed.
Students learn to:
• Compare and contrast plans and responses to various types of events and disasters
• Analyze leadership competence and necessary leadership skills
• Develop and analyze strategies to implement team solutions
• Present a model of effective communication within an emergency response and planning structure
• Plan and report on strategies for mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery
• Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of an emergency response and planning strategy
