The Creative Writing Program at University College is designed for students interested in developing their skills in the creative genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Our goal is to help you focus and define your writing, sustain and strengthen your work, and complete creative and professional projects.
The program provides the best in classroom and online learning. Courses stress workshops and revision, and address aspects of publishing and working with editors. To provide the best opportunity for personalized learning, most classes in the program are limited to 16 students. The creative industries – which include publishing, media and journalism, film, music, and performance – are among the top ten in the world.
Students in our program love to learn writing and literature, and our graduates live the writing life, whether they teach about writing or write for professional and personal reasons. All MALS courses in the Creative Writing Certificate may be applied for credit toward the Master of Liberal Studies.
Students will:
• Use written language to communicate more clearly and powerfully in your professional and personal life
• Move beyond mastering mechanical skills and conveying information to writing artfully, evoking emotions, and expressing points of view
• Participate in intensive workshops designed to give your writing personalized attention
• Read and critique literature with the eye of a writer and editor
• Work with dedicated faculty who will help you extend your potential as a writer and address your writing strengths and weaknesses
• Share with other students your experience with the craft of writing
• Foster your creativity in a positive atmosphere in which you receive constructive feedback on your writing
