Liberal Studies Courses

World Literature - 4 credits

Is there a national or world literature? How does literature cross local or national boundaries? These are some of the questions that are explored in this course. To do so, students take a literary journey around the world, focusing on transnationalism in literary representation and analysis. Our journey involves studies of modern literature from Africa and the Caribbean, Asia and the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Textual analysis and cultural or intercultural context in the readings and discussions is emphasized. Attention is also paid to the relation between literary works from different places and time periods. Our literary journey therefore involves in-depth, critical reflection.
