Tom Tierney
Academic Director, Information & Communications Technology

I joined the University of Denver in October '07 as Academic Director of the Computer Information Systems and Telecommunications graduate programs at University College. Over the past year, I have led the restructuring of the CIS, Telecom, and Technology Management programs into a combined Information & Communications Technology program. I believe that all technology professionals today, whether you design software, manage communications networks, or lead technical organizations, should understand how the exploding demand for multimedia content, combined with rapid technological innovation, are transforming the industry. The convergence of voice, data, multimedia applications, and web-based services onto a global IP infrastructure, defines the industry. To that end, the ICT program reflects that convergence.

Prior to joining DU, I spent most of my career as a leader of software development organizations, developing communications products and applications for enterprise markets. In addition to software development, I also have extensive experience leading product localization, documentation, and technical support organizations. Throughout my career in R&D, I particularly enjoyed the global nature of my work, both with regard to designing products for global markets, and leading global teams throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.

I started my career in education and research before joining Bell Labs to do Human Factors engineering. In returning to academics, my goal is to use my industry experience to help ensure that our curriculum meets the needs of business today, while also keeping pace with emerging industry trends and needs.

My education includes a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Marquette University, a PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Maine, and an MBA from the University of Colorado.
