Karen received her Masters and Doctorate in Human Development from Harvard University and BA, summa cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis. Karen worked for Bell Labs (AT&T/Lucent/Avaya) as a Human Factors engineer for 4 years, doing usability research and user-interface design on projects such as video-teleconferencing, membrane switch keyboards, AT&T’s first voice mail system, and the design of a terminal for the deaf (precursor to today’s laptops). Following this, she served as a Technical Manager for 24 years, where she was responsible for the delivery of software applications that remotely diagnosed telecommunications equipment/software problems and that facilitated the installation and management of voice-data systems. As a coach, she also led global development teams and helped manage the career development of her associates. She is co-inventor on 3 US patents from this work. Prior to this, she was an Assistant Professor and Research Associate in the Psychology Dept at the University of Denver. Karen also has her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute. She has also served as an Executive coach and helped build an IT organization from scratch for a start-up insurance company. Karen is a participating faculty member in the Daniels College of Business at DU, where she teaches Leadership and Communication to undergraduates, Enterprise Solutions to MBAs, and coaches Executive MBA students. These classes are part of the Leadership and Organizational Performance Institute. Next year she will also originate an undergraduate honors course on the mind of a leader.
