Graduate International Admission
International applicants must comply with all requirements set forth for domestic applicants and supplement their application with additional requirements (see international student checklist).
International students are highly encouraged to submit ALL application items three weeks before posted deadlines.
These additional requirements include:
1. English Language Proficiency
All internationally educated students whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency regardless of citizenship/U.S. residency.
Are there exceptions to this?
- If the student received a bachelor’s degree from an educational institution that is formally-recognized/accredited by the Ministry of Education (or equivalent) in the country where the school is located, and the institution’s entire language of instruction is English, the applicant is exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.
What score is needed?
- University College requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 80 internet-based, or a 6.0 IELTS score. Our school code for the TOEFL is 4842.
TOEFL or IELTS score reports older than two years from the date of application are not acceptable for DU admission consideration.
Conditional Admission
Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for English proficiency may be conditionally admitted to University College degree programs pending English proficiency, if the applicant is academically admissible, meets all other admission requirements and has sufficient proof of financial support. In order to begin the master’s degree program, students must either present the minimum TOEFL/IELTS score or complete the University’s English Language Center’s full-time intensive language courses through level 6 (the Graduate Preparation Program), which may take between 10 weeks and 18 months depending on placement test results and individual student progress. Academic classes may not be taken while students are enrolled at the English Language Center. If you are interested in pursuing English conditional admission, please contact the University College Admission Office for more information.
2. Official Transcripts and Appropriate Official Third-Party Translations
International applicants should submit official transcripts printed in the official language of instruction of their institution. If the official language of instruction is not English, official translated copies should also be submitted by a qualified educational translation service.
3. Photocopy of Diploma/Degree Certificate and Appropriate Translations
Please submit a copy of your diploma or degree certificate along with all appropriate official translations.
4. A photocopy of your current passport
Please provide a copy of the photograph and legal name page of your passport. This can be uploaded and attached to your online application. If you currently do not have a passport, you will need to make arrangements to obtain a passport before an I-20 can be issued by the University of Denver. If you are submitting the online application prior to obtaining a passport, please email a copy of your passport to Ucoladm@du.edu once you have received it.
5. The Supplemental Information Form (SEVIS supplement)
The SEVIS Supplement Form can be submitted at the same time as your online application. Please have the document accessible when completing the online application so it can be uploaded and attached prior to submitting the application. If you are submitting the online application before completing the SEVIS form, please email the document to Ucoladm@du.edu when you are ready to submit it.
6. A financial verification form.
If it is your intention to apply for a student visa, we will also need a financial verification form in order for the University to issue you an I-20 (the government document that allows a student visa to be granted). This typically takes the form of an official bank letter, and is used to verify that the student has enough financial resources available to cover the cost of attendance. For the 2009-10 academic year, financial verification forms must reference a specific amount in excess of US $28,594. The letter should be original (not a fax or photocopy) and have the signature of an officer of the financial institution.
All credentials submitted become property of the University of Denver and cannot be copied or returned to the student or any person(s).
