New Master’s Degree Specialty in Arts Development and Program Management to be offered at University of Denver

The University of Denver is now offering a Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) in Arts Development and Program Management online and evenings for working adults through University College, the college of professional and continuing studies.

The specialty in Arts Development and Program Management explores the intricacies and skills of managing and developing an arts organization. It is designed to help those individuals who are responsible for assuring that the vehicles for artists to engage and impact their communities exist and flourish as professional organizations. Students will focus on funding and leading an arts organization. They will learn best practices and utilize them in event planning, as well as how facilities management skills are necessary in successful event planning and program development. Students will delve into developing and marketing to an audience for the arts and arts-related events.
Students in this specialty are encouraged to pursue related subject areas like project management, fundraising, and marketing to develop skills that will aid in their arts management and development endeavors. All these skills are examined, analyzed, and applied in this new University College master’s program.

The Arts Development and Program Management specialty is just one facet of the Master’s Program in Arts and Culture which also includes concentrations and certificates of advanced study in Arts, Literature, and Culture; Creative Writing; and Visual Art and Design. A University College master’s degree can be earned in less than two years by completing 48 credit hours. Graduate certificates allow professionals to add a powerful skill set to their capabilities in one year by completing 24 credit hours. Credits earned as part of a graduate certificate can be applied toward the completion of a University College master’s degree.

“At the University of Denver, we have a long tradition offering applied graduate education that is current and reflects industry changes and challenges,” notes Alison Nishi, Academic Director of the Arts and Culture Program at University College. “The development of this new Arts Development and Program Management program gives those in the artistic community and their support organizations the professional tools to address the challenging and increasingly volatile environment that the economy has presented us with. This program also offers a new avenue to increase students educational experiences and offers an advanced degree, which allows students to either ‘go deeper’ into their specific industry or ‘go broader’ in their specific area of practice and expertise and tailor their continuing education to not only their current position, but future positions as well.”

Programs at University College are developed and updated with the input of advisory boards composed of industry leaders and employers. This ensures that students will learn what employers are looking for and gain the most current information with a view to future industry trends connecting them to future success.
